before the dawn chorus

It's hard to believe it has been nearly 3 years since I've posted a mix, I've had many on the go over those years and while I always found working on them a relaxing way to wind down after the day I've never felt happy enough with them to make them public. Before the Dawn Chorus was actually part of another mix, but I liked how the segment sounded so much that I removed it and grew a new mix from the "cutting". This isn't the first time this has happened and it is part of the reason why I have so many unfinished mixes - they keep breeding!

This is a relatively large mix, the music needed room to breathe - it seemed like the right thing to do. These tracks are mostly ones I enjoyed from 2007, with a few older favorites interspersed. I wanted to create something that was representative (in part) of what I've been listening to and that was perfect for relaxing, reading, or sleeping. I don't have a lot of bandwidth so I have to rely on free hosting sites, if you have trouble accessing them let me know and I will find another way to get it to you. If anyone would like to host it please feel free, post me the link in comments and I will add it to the list. If you would like to burn it on cd (anyone actually do that anymore?) I can break it up into burnable segments, but it will have to wait until I return from my holidays as I leave on the boat tonight.

I remember once reading that Zbigniew Preisner said he always takes time out of his day to listen to music by candlelight, so before I finalized this mix I did just that; I turned off all distractions and lights, lit candles, laid down, and put my headphones on. Merry christmas and enjoy. :)

I've been so absorbed in making this all week that I haven't listened to anything else, I put your latest QuietSounds on my nano to listen to on the boat to France, I think it will be a great travel companion!

I'm downloading just now.

Sendspace is definitely faster than Filefactory. (though neither is too zippy)

I look forward to it. Certainly the two previous have been fantastic.

I hope you get it okay, I know those services can be a bit unreliable!

Thank you. This mix is more subtle than my last two, a gentle soundscape. If people fall asleep to it I will take it as a compliment. :)

I'm surprised people remember any of my old ones, they were so long ago!
I've been reminded how much I enjoy sharing music, hope to have less than a 3 year gap before the next one. ;)

The track list looks very enticing. It's going to take me an hour to download, though...

Afterwards I'll upload it to my server, and then post the URL here. (Probably tomorrow morning PST.)

Wow, thanks! It looks amazing. The tracks I recognize are some of my favorites from this year too. I really ought to do a similar mix.. it's been forever since I've made one.

I'd love to hear your mix if you decide to make it! Even if it uses some of the same tracks as mine I think it's interesting how different people can use the same or similar music and come up with something that is still unique and personal.

He really deserve more attention, it is a shame the "lost album" Silent Flower Observers was never released.. apparently he wasn't happy with it and scrapped the entire thing, fortunately there's still a few copies floating around on the net as there's some gorgeous tracks on there!

Very earteresting!

The stuff around 00:33:20 is vert Frippy... do you think it is a homage to Let the Power Fall?

On December 23rd, 2007 03:29 pm (UTC), nomi replied:
I wouldn't be surprised if Fehlmann was heavily influenced by Fripp, one reason why I liked the track so much was because it reminded me of him. :)

Thanks for posting this! A little history about how I ended up on your friends list. Four or five years ago, LJ had the coolest tool on how one could locate friends by common interest. The more obscure the interest, the higher the score. We scored pretty high, mostly on musical tastes, and I added you. I've been horrible to keep up with posting in my LJ but just can't seem to quite leave it behind as I enjoy keeping up with those on my friends list and especially finding gems like your mix. Thanks for sharing!

I remember that interest search tool, I found so many great people through that! I'm so pleased that you've enjoyed the mix, at times I doubted if I would even post it as I wasn't sure there would be any interest in mixes anymore, but it is encouraging to get positive feedback and I will no doubt have more to share in the future. :)

thanks for posting this. it's been a long time since i've had three contiguous hours to do anything without distraction or interruption, so i hope it's ok if i listen to this in bits.

you came to mind when a couple of tunes popped up tonight. they're probably not quite as horizontal as most of the stuff in your mix but you might like them (if you don't already know them):

I don't expect many people will be able to listen to it all in one go; I usually have to listen to it in bits myself, but I've enjoyed just having it on in the background or falling asleep to it.

Thanks for the tunes, I'm back home now so I just gave them a listen and they really hit the spot.. feeling chilled out now. :)
