Last night Alix came downstairs to talk to me about the wedding plans. She is an excellent organizer and we sat down on the deck and scheduled out the next two weeks, she made calls to everyone we need to see and organized meetings with all of them. She is completely saving my ass. I love you Alix.
This morning we drove out to a plant nursery to ask them about potted blooming plants to use as centerpieces for the tables at the reception. The woman we talked to, Laura, was so helpful and friendly. She was just married a few months ago and had twig wreaths that she used to decorate with that she just gave us to borrow.
I've been so amazed at the generosity in this community. So many store owners - even people we barely know - have offered to lend or give us services and items for the wedding. Friends have offered whatever they can to help for the wedding and as wedding gifts. Our friend Pete offered to give Max and I private dance lessons and Dave offered to cook a 5 course gourmet meal for the two of us. Dave is also helping with catering with Efra and Nate, who are all excellent chefs and generously offering their talents for free. We met with all three of them tonight at our house for wine tasting and dinner to discuss the catering plans. Efra can order most of the food cheaply through the distributors that the restaurant he works for uses. I really enjoyed figuring out all the food with them - we've come up with what I think will be an amazing meal. We're going with a buffet style layout and it will have a wide variety of food from grilled salmon with a strawberry and chipotle marinade to chicken molé. With of course an ample amount of wonderful cheeses, pasta salads, fruits, and meats like prosciutto and mortadella. We are going to have all this kick ass food to feed 120 people and it will cost a fraction of what it would through a typical caterer.
When I think of how willing everyone has been to help out I feel moved enough to cry. I have no doubt in my mind that this wedding is going to be incredible. We have a relatively tiny budget, but what makes it so wonderful is our friends, family, and community all pulling together and offering all they can to throw one large and happy celebration. Max and I's unique long distance situation only adds to the intensity and specialness of it.
I've been so busy these past few months working on the details of the wedding, but the next two weeks are packed. There was a point that I was about to break down completely and I wasn't sure if I would be able to handle organizing the event and the various family and personal stresses. But it's becoming fun again and I'm now starting to look forward to the day with more excitement than stress.
of course you're not boring! - I always like to keep up with people who passed through the hendon district and then went on to do something else... Am sitting here revising for exams tomorrow, so you're giving me some hope... good luck with it all.
I feel so blessed by the friends and family in my life.
I plan on posting as many photos as I can.. I just hope that I don't feel too self-concious and I like how I end up looking on the day. That's been one of my main worries, unfortunately.
